BIM 4D +5D

**2021 Workflow preference note**
In this general workflow, Primavera and Navisworks timeline have been featured.
However, there are more UI friendly applications out there with better visualisation and inter-operability from my point of view.

I prefer using Assemble (Part of Autodesk Construction Cloud) and Hexagon EcoSys as they integrate seamlessly from a single source of truth, leveraging information delivery and administration).

Also, even Twinmotion for construction timeline simulator rather than Navisworks -  As we all acknowledge that NW is being a pain from its instability issue and has been abandoned by Autodesk for quite long time.

4D & 5D BIM play crucial role in the project

  • Reduce Time Schedule

  • Increase Earn Value and project efficiencies

CRITICAL for Project managers & Cost Planners

TERMS - Definitions of 4D & 5D BIM by NBS (National BIM Standards)

BIM 4D is Construction sequencing: Add Scheduling data to 3D Model

BIM 5D is Cost Implications and quantification:
Extract accurate cost information from 3D model
Estimate purchasing/installing/replacement cost from 3D model

4D & 5D DELIVERY through INTER-OPERABILITY

  • PLANT 3D/REVIT/RHINO/ARCHICAD/BENTLY etc

  • PRIMAVERA

  • NAVISWORKS

  • EXCEL

BIM 5D Workflow

  • Prepare 3D BIM Model

  • Export DWG/DWFX

  • Export XLS/CSV Files

  • Create XLSX workbook

BIM 5D
  • Navisworks to open DWG and Create the FEDERATED model (NWF)

  • Using Data Tools icon, Import XLSX file

[Data Tools Overview - Imported information Mapping Setup]

  • Find Items to create Searchsets

  • Prepare Quantification Workbook

  • Prepare Query Project Setup Parameters

- MasterFormat

- UniFormat
- Custom (XML): Company/Project Specific
- None: Create from Scratch

  • Export XLSX from Primavera P6 and Import to NWF

[Primavera P6 Overview - Export from Resources Tab]

  • Fill in Mandatory fields and Export Catalogues under Result Connect Tab

- WBS (Work Breakdown Structure), Type and Name sections are Mandatory to be filled in!

- WBS is to build the hierarchy between Group and Item Type
- Transparency range can be established on item only. In between from 0 (Transparent) to 1 (Opaque), Default is 0.3

- Color can be assigned to item only. Prefer controlled by template.
- Primary Quantity Units can be defined for item only

  • Catalogues will be loaded into Resource and Item Catalog, respectively.

By going through these mapping, the Quantification Workbook will receive proper measurements and values.

  • Quantification of Non-Physical Labor can be defined from Resource Catalog

  • 2D Take-Off can be also done through by importing Vectorised PDF or DWG

  • Change Analysis will be allowing us to accept/decline/hold the changes when there are modifications from model

  • Workbook can be exported to Excel format for further development of Costing and Quantification
